Summary of the seminar “Assessment for development – assumptions, challenges, support instruments” in Zielona Góra

A visit from Minister Barbara Nowacka, lectures from experts, references to scientific research results, presentation of examples of solutions from abroad and the activities of the Educational Research Institute in its work of supporting education – we invite you to the summary of the seminar on methods and research for representatives of the education system from the Lubuskie Voivodeship.

The seminar “Assessment for development  – assumptions, challenges, support instruments” was organized by the Educational Research Institute – National Research Institute in cooperation with the Lubuskie Board of Education and took place on March 12, 2025 in Space Technology Park.

The aim of the meeting, which is one in a series of events, was to provide information on the principles and practice of assessment to support learning and student development, to address the topic of assessment from the perspective of educational psychology, as well as the key challenges facing schools in this area.

The seminar was opened by the special guest of the event, Minister of Education Barbara Nowacka:

I am glad to be able to participate in the debate, which will help us to better prepare the reform. The Ministry of National Education does not aim to impose ideas, but above all to gain knowledge from practicing teachers.

Barbara Nowacka, Minister of Education

The opening of the event was also attended by Mariusz Biniewski, Lubuski Superintendent of Education, and Dr. Tomasz Gajderowicz, Deputy Director of the Educational Research Institute.

Appropriate feedback, changing the negative emotions associated with asking questions during lessons, the graduate profile

The deputy director of IBE PIB recalled the results of the PISA 2022 survey, which show that Polish teens are not motivated to learn:

“(…) they are pretty good at solving tasks, not bad at thinking, but when asked why they do it or if they see the point of it, they are completely unable to agree with this statement.”

Dr. Gajderowicz also emphasized that the Institute is currently working on educational reform, and that the graduate profile developed by IBE PIB experts is an element of the foundation of this reform.
Motivating students and performing a proper assessment are very important points on the road to better education and are closely related.

Research shows that the best teachers are those who ask the most questions in different ways: tests, quizzes. However, students don’t like these methods because of their fear of being graded.
