The Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is the largest international survey of adults. It is rooted in the belief that skills are crucial to functioning in the modern world and are a prerequisite for socio-economic development and well-being.
The PIAAC survey measures three basic skills acknowledged as essential for personal and professional life, while also providing the basis for acquiring new competences and knowledge. These are: literacy, numeracy and problem solving.
The PIAAC survey provides knowledge about skills and their use in work and everyday life. It also helps to better understand how the education system, in-school and out-of-school learning as well as work experiences contribute to the development of skills.
