The monograph Spectrum of National Identity Attitudes at School is an interdisciplinary work that analyses the process of national identity formation in the Polish educational system. The publication, edited by Robert Zieliński and others, discusses how school influences the development of a sense of national belonging in young people.
The work consists of three main parts, each offering a different perspective on the issue at hand. The first part focuses on the theoretical and ideological underpinnings of national education, discussing, among others, the mechanisms of cultural learning and the roles that educational programmes play in this process. The second part contains empirical research on the national attitudes of students, teachers and school principals, analysing, among other things, patriotic attitudes, attitudes toward history and opinions on the “criteria of Polishness.” In the third part, the monograph looks at practical aspects of national education, such as the celebration of national holidays, school ceremonies and the role of folklore in music education. The entire work is enriched with reflections on the challenges of contemporary patriotic and civic education in the context of cultural diversity. The authors emphasize the importance of the school as an institution that shapes national identity, but also enables confrontation with other cultures. The publication is a valuable resource for both researchers and practitioners involved in education and upbringing in Poland. Spectrum of National Identity Attitudes at School.
