‘Young people's social mobility expectations in an unequal world’. An article by Francesca Borgonovi and Artur Pokropek in ‘Science’

An article by Francesca Borgonovi (UCL/OECD) and Artur Pokropek (IBE PIB) in the latest issue of the journal analyses the expectations of young people in 57 countries around the world, based on the 2022 PISA survey.

The article ‘Young people's social mobility expectations in an unequal world’ has been published in the latest issue of the scientific journal Science.

The publication shows that young people in countries with greater economic inequality have higher expectations for their future social position. Despite barriers limiting their real chances of advancement, they expect to achieve a higher status than their parents.

Analysis of PISA research in the latest issue of Science

The publication by Francesca Borgonovi (UCL/OECD) and Artur Pokropek (IBE PIB) in ‘Science’ argues that these expectations may stem from a belief that talent, good education and effort should result in professional and social success. The conclusions of the PISA study emphasise that the gap between high expectations and realistically limited opportunities may lead to frustration, disappointment and social unrest in the future.

To prevent this, measures are needed to ensure that young people's beliefs have a genuine chance of becoming a reality, rather than just aspirations.
