An IBE publication: Universal design for learning. A guidebook for teachers

School should be a safe place for every student, a place where they are respected and their needs are met, where they can develop to the best of their abilities and succeed, regardless of their background, health, social status, gender, place of residence, race or religion.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a concept embedded in quality education for all pupils. Recognizing the diversity of those involved in the education process as a core value is the basis for building a positive place for implementing inclusive education.

The guidebook “Universal Design in Education” aims to present the basic premises of UDL and show the validity of its application in the context of the accessibility law. Above all, it is intended to help teachers and educators understand the essence of universal design in education and identify pathways to introduce UDL into teaching practice.

The guidebook answers these basic questions:

  • What is accessibility?
  • What is universal design?
  • How can the principles of accessibility and universal design in education be applied?

Teachers can benefit from a compendium of knowledge on the topics listed above, but they also receive practical tips and examples of how to apply activities in accordance with the principles of accessibility. The information contained in the publication makes it easier to check whether the classes conducted are designed universally, which teaching techniques to use, how to prepare materials adapted to diverse needs, and much more.
